Drug use in some countries is increasing the spread of hepatitis C.
More than 12,400 drug users in Ireland are believed to be infected with hepatitis C.
A study has provided the first comprehensive national estimate of the incidence of hepatitis C among people who regularly inject drugs.
The Health Research Board (HRB) estimated that more than 9,317 of drug users with hepatitis C suffered from chronic forms of the disease.
The research team said there could be thousands more undiagnosed cases among recent immigrants to Ireland.
They pointed out that although asylum seekers are routinely offered infectious disease testing, there is no systematic testing for other migrants.
