Rate of chronic liver disease is rising around the globe. People of all age groups are living with some kind of liver ailment, largely as a result of lifestyle problems such as alcohol, drug-taking or health issues like obesity.
If not treated on time, most of the liver ailments progress to cirrhosis of the liver- a slowly progressing condition in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with severely scarred tissue which eventually hampers the functioning of the liver; and then to liver cancer and eventually acute liver failure, most of the times requiring extremely expensive liver transplant procedure.
Although medical science has developed state-of-the-art technologies to treat liver disease, but experts still believe on the age old wisdom that ‘prevention is better than cure.’
On World Liver Day yesterday (Tuesday, April 19), medical experts affirmed that most of the prevalent liver ailments can be prevented by lifestyle modifications.
