Hepatitis C is the number one reason for liver transplants in the U.S. Tens of thousands may be walking around with it unbeknownst to them.
John Colvin, 65, got his first taste of morphine when he injured his leg as a teenager.
“They cut me off of it,” Colvin said. “I went through the withdrawals as they were and didn’t think anything more about it until about five years later.”
That’s when he started using heroin.
“The first shot that I ever did, I knew this is it, this was for me,” Colvin recalled.
But along the way he didn’t just get high, he got hepatitis C.
“Somewhere along the line, sharing the needles or sharing the water that you use, I wound up getting hepatitis C and I didn’t know about that until ’08 when I was diagnosed with it,” Colvin said.
